Not gonna lie, I heard the hype about The Witcher series on Netflix, so I watched it. I liked it. I’ve been on a bit of a fantasy kick lately, and that fit right in. Cool. Then, as I was walking past the bookstore on my street, they had signs advertising the books. I’m a fan of supporting local shops, liked the series, so figured “why not”. And here we are.
So, to the review. The book is a bunch of short stories, all around the main character Geralt of Rivia. The stories are engrossing. It’s easy to get hooked, easy to follow the plot lines, and easy to lose yourself in the author’s world. This is pure brain candy. You won’t be challenged by moral or ethical dilemmas, won’t be forced to confront sad or ugly truths of history or modern society. This is just a bunch of short stories about a mutant with a moral compass who kills (certain) monsters for money. What’s not to like? Side note: it’s not gory, either. It’s written in a very PG13 style.
The original stories were written in Polish, and at times I definitely felt the translation wasn’t the greatest. Still, those few occurrences were only small distractions, nothing that prevented me from really enjoying the stories.
Verdict: Mild recommend. If you have an interest in fantasy, this is a low-effort way to get into it.
